There aredifferent things to consider when creating a learning environment including the number ofstudents that are going to be learning within the environment, the type of learning that is going totake place, the resources that are going to be available to the students within the environment,making the environment warm by decorating the walls and having things hanging from theceiling to reduce dead space, and creating an environment that will allow the teacher to see all ofthe students from any place in the classroom.Classroom DesignEffective Group3Group Learning ReflectionClassroom DesignThis classroom design is for first grade students. The desks are set up to supportindividual and group learning.” Desks arranged in groups imply that interaction andcollaboration among students are expected for at least some activities. Desks in rows indicatethat the focus of the classroom is the teacher, the board, or some other central point.” (Everston& Emmer, p 12, 2013). The desks face the smart board allowing the teacher to stand by the boardand teach the class lessons. The closet next to the smart board will house classroom supplies thatneed to be available for the lesson being taught, classroom supplies that don’t need to be out atthe current time, and files and papers that need to be locked up. The shelves next to the desk willhave manipulative resources, books, art supplies, a pencil sharpener, and other resources for thestudents to use throughout the day. “Keeping materials accessible not only minimizes time spentgetting ready and cleaning up, but also helps to avoid distracting slowdowns and breaks in thelesson flow.” (Everston & Emmer, p 13, 2013). The kidney table and chairs behind the desks willbe used during small group activity. This is a table that the teacher can sit at with students whoneed more help and/or direction individually or in a small group. This is an appropriate table forthe teacher to use during meetings with parents or other collogues. The square rug in the backright corner with the chairs and book stand can be used for instruction, quite time, and centers.The book stand will house books for the students to read throughout the day. Next to the rug isthe teacher’s desk. There are also shelves and filing cabinets behind the desk that will allow forthe teacher to store learning materials, papers, classroom resources, and the teacher’s personaldecorations and supplies. Next to the teacher’s desk is the computer station. The computerstation is close to the teacher allowing the teacher to be able to monitor computer usage and helpEffective Group4the students on the computer when needed. In the front right corner of the classroom there isanother shelf and round table with chairs. This can be used for small group learning, centers,one-on-one student to teacher tutoring, and/or free time. This classroom will also have differentposters and bulletin board displays on the walls. The posters will include a calendar and weatherarea, the alphabet, numbers, student birthdays, classroom rules, posters corresponding to thelessons being taught at the time, and emergency procedures. The bulletin boards will correspondto the season and have something to do with the student’s artwork and/or the students names ondisplay. One bulletin board will be dedicated to student of the week. Allowing the student todecorate the board with whatever they would like for the week. The ceiling will house hangingseasonal classroom decorations and/or students work. “Hanging up student work in the room isalso another way to build a strong community in your classroom.” (Abepiusc, 2017).Classroom Setting and FocusThis classroom’s goal is to provide a warm, safe, and welcoming environment for thestudents to learn, play, and feel safe in. The classroom will act as a community for the studentsduring the school year. “Students’ involvement in the process of creating their environment canempower them, develop community and increase motivation.” (Phillips, 2014). The students willbe comfortable within this classroom and be able to make mistakes without feeling embarrassed.Diversity will be expressed in the classroom in different ways. Allowing the students to knowthey are all different and that it is not a bad thing. “When a student feels comfortable in theclassroom, they will be more likely to take the risks that are necessary for language learning, andthey won’t feel bad about themselves when they make mistakes.” (Abepiusc, 2017). Student’swill want to be in this classroom because it is a fun place to learn and enjoy all aspects of school.Effective Group5Classroom Organization“Organizing the furniture, equipment, materials, and supplies in the classroom is anecessary beginning task for teaching.” (Everston & Emmer, p 23, 2013). Classroomorganization is also necessary for students to be able to function and achieve academic success.This classroom is organized in a way that the teacher can see the whole classroom from theirdesk, work with the students if needed in different locations in the room, provide instructionallearning in two different places in the room, allow the students to work on an individual andgroup level, and allow the students to use the resources available to them in the room. The hightraffic areas within this classroom are free of congestion.Group Learning ActivitiesGroup learning has become more prominent in the educational environment. Grouplearning helps students work together by using vocabulary on their level to help everyone withinthe group understand the topic. Each student in the group will bring something different to thegroup. The low level performers will learn from their peers examples or explanations. Themiddle to high level performers will better their understanding by explaining the topic to theother members of the group. “Small groups have greater potential for participation, feedback,and mutual construction of meaning among students. The group format encourages students tobecome active participants rather than passive recipients of information.” (Everston & Emmer, p127, 2013).Effective CommunicationEffective communication includes both talking and listening. As a teacher we have to beable to talk and listen effectively to our students, the student’s parents, and other members on theeducational team. When dealing with students who have diverse needs, including languageEffective Group6barriers and cultural differences it is important to watch the student’s non-verbal communicationand facial expressions to fully be able to understand what they are trying to convey to you. Thesestudents may need additional resources to help them communicate and fully understand what isbeing said to them. The resources will vary depending on the student’s age and academic level.The resources could be as simple as communication cards with pictures on them that the studentcan show or point to, to convey what they are trying to say, or can be as complex as a computerthat they student inputs what they want to convey and the computer says what was input into it.There is always going to be diversity among the students within the group you are trying toteach. It is important to accept everyone for who they are and the differences they bring to theclass as a whole.Future PracticeI will use all of this research in my future practices in many ways. I have learned allabout the classroom environment and the best way to place things within the environmentdepending on the type of learning I want to take place. I have also learned the importance ofallowing the students to help in creating the environment. I will allow my students to help medecorate the classroom and have a place for them to display pictures, drawings, or class workthat they are proud of. I will also have a diverse environment for the students to learn in. Thisallows the students to know that even though they are all different they are all accepted for whothey are. I will decorate my classroom to make it feel warm and welcoming. I also want to have aplace within my classroom to have bean bag chairs and or a small couch with a rug for thestudents to use during centers or quiet time.
